Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942. This historic movement was launched with the aim of attaining complete independence from British. Mahatma Gandhi carried out this movement for rescuing the country from the British. At the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay, Gandhiji launched the 'Quit India' movement, one of the largest popular upsurges in history. His call for civil disobedience and the 'do or die' slogan kindled the need for freedom in the hearts of all Indians.
The Cripps Mission and its failure also played an important role in Gandhi's call for the Quit India Movement. Gandhi ji gave a call to the British to withdraw from India. The movement was started after Cripps Mission failed in India. The Cripps mission was an attempt in late March 1942 by the British government to secure full Indian cooperation and support for their efforts in World War II. The mission was headed by Sir Stafford Cripps He decided to launch a mass civil disobedience movement 'Do or Die' call to force the British to leave India. He invited the people to join the movement non-violently and simply raise the slogans against the Britishers who found themselves to be heavily engaged in the Second World War.
Communist Party and The Viceroy’s Council of Muslims Supported the Britishers. Americans’ support also overpowered the movement. During the movement, for several weeks there was widespread rioting and the British lost control in some parts of the country. Even machine guns and aerial bombings were used by British officials to restore their rule. Quit India Movement is one of the most important milestones in the Indian freedom movement.
He and many other leaders were immediately arrested and kept out of touch with the people of India. There were several processions, strikes, and demonstrations, during the first half of the Quit India Movement.
The Second Half of the Movement Was Violent. With post offices, government buildings, railway stations and municipal houses getting raided and being set on fire. The ‘Great August Uprising’ happened around this time. Quit India Movement was the final push towards Independence. All nationalists joined this movement.
