According to the story, Ganesh was created by Goddess Parvathi. She created him with the sandalwood paste while Lord Shiva was away. She had asked him to guard at the entrance door while she takes bath.

 In the meantime, when lord Shiva returned he was stopped by Ganesha which led to a tiff between them. This angered Shiva who then beheaded Ganesha. Parvathi was enraged to witness such a sight. Therefore, Shiva promised to bring Ganesha back to life. All the searchers went looking for a person’s head stretching the entire north, but the only head they could find was of an elephant. When the elephant’s head was brought to Lord Shiva, he implanted it on the body of Ganesh to bring him to life again. And this way our Lord Ganesh awas born, and this re-birth of the elephant-headed boy is celebrated as the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.
